Distinguished Colleagues, Dear Friends,

This is my thirty seventh progress report after 1125 days as your President. Note that previous reports are on the ISSMGE web site ( under “From the President” if you need them. In this report, I would like to talk to you about our next webinars, about some results of the ISSMGE Board meeting in Argentina, and about the last 2 new ISSMGE awards.

Webinar. Remember that our webinars will free until Sept 2013. The next webinar will be on Earthquake Geotechnical Engineering. It will be presented by Professor Ikuo Towhata (Japan) who has written a book on the topic. For more administrative details contact Theresa Taeger at The instructions to register are:

ISSMGE Board meeting in Argentina. The Board met and made a number of decisions. Here are those which may be of most interest to you. As you know, ISSMGE collects a percentage of the money paid by participants to register at ISSMGE conferences. The percentages are as follows: 2% for Technical Committees and other conferences where ISSMGE is a sponsor or co-sponsor, 3% for the 5 Regional ISSMGE conferences, and 5% for the quadrennial conferences. I am happy to tell you that at my request, the Board decided to abolish the 2% contribution for Technical Committees and other conferences starting with conferences occurring after 1 January 2013. The 3% and 5% contributions are maintained however. To use the ISSMGE logo on conferences promotion material, a request must be sent to the Secretary General( and permission must be obtained. I would like to encourage everyone to use the ISSMGE logo as broadly as possible to gain further exposure worldwide for ISSMGE. I hope that the disappearance of the 2% rule will help significantly in that respect. On a different topic, I noticed that the Statutes were written with the masculine gender and a footnote indicating that it meant everyone. The Board decided to rewrite the Statutes in gender neutral language. This means a lot of work for our Secretary General; it also requires a vote of the Council in Paris next September. I hope that this will be approved by Council.

Awards. As you know, we have created a number of new awards because the ratio of ISSMGE awards to individual members was drastically lower than any other professional society that I know. The first 5 awards namely Outstanding Innovator, Outstanding Member Society, Outstanding Technical Committee, Outstanding Paper in the Int. Journ. of Geoengineering Case histories, Outstanding Geotechnical Engineering Project had a deadline of 30Sept2012 and we have received a good number of very strong nominations. The last 2 awards were requested by the Students and Young Member Presidential Group (Outstanding Young Geotechnical Engineer) and by the Public Relations Committee (Outstanding Pubic Relation) and have been approved by the Board. The deadline for these 2 awards is 28Feb2013. The winners will be honored at the Awards Luncheon at the ICSMGE in Paris on 2Sept2013. The young member award is self explanatory but, in my opinion,  the public relation award will best serve our profession if it is given to someone outside our society to enhance our image, someone in the news media or TV documentary on geotechnical engineering producer for example. More details on the awards can be found at The nominations for these awards must come from a member society and be sent to the Secretary General ( by the deadline of 28Feb2013.

Best Wishes,

Jean-Louis BRIAUD
