270-DAY REPORT

Distinguished Colleagues, Dear Friends,

This is my ninth progress report after 270 days as your President. Note that previous reports are on the ISSMGE web site under “From the President” if you need them. In this report, I would like to talk to you about Distribution Lists, about the Bulletin, and about the name ISSMGE.

Distribution Lists.

The following lists exists for reaching different people within ISSMGE.

ISSMGE Member Societies: all the leaders of the Member Societies at the emails they provided.
ISSMGE TC Chairs: all the current Chairs and some past Chairs of ISSMGE Technical Committees.
ISSMGE Corporate Associates: all the current Corporate Associates as listed on the ISSMGE web site

ISSMGE Discuss: all individual members who signed up for this list. Please sign up if you wish.
For the last three lists, you can check my 240 days progress report for more details. You may be able to copy those list from the “To” address of this email. If not, just let me know and I can send you the list you wish to use. Obviously you need to exercise good judgment before sending an email to many people and I count on you to do so.

ISSMGE Bulletin. We would like you to consider sharing some important news with all of our members by sending a news brief, an article, a summary report on your activities as a Member Society or a TC, a provoking or innovative thought, a conference announcement, ……. Professor Towhata (Japan) and his team are doing an excellent job in preparing the Bulletin. You can reach him at towhata@geot.t.u-tokyo.ac.jp . The Bulletin comes out every three months at the end of the month (March, June, September, December) and the deadlines are 15 days before publication (15 March, 15 June, 15 September, 15 December). Because of the increase in volume, starting in 2011, the Bulletin will come out every 2 months at the end of the month (February, April, June, August, October, December) and the deadlines will still be 15 days before publication ( 15 February, 15 April, 15 June, 15 August, 15 October, 15 December). Please use this very convenient way to talk to the world of geo-engineering.

ISSMGE or ISGE. Should we be called Geotechnical Engineers or Geo-Engineers? The word technical seems redundant alongside engineer. Indeed it is difficult to imagine a non-technical engineer. Also the word technical is close to technicians and may give the wrong idea about our profession. We also accept many words like geo-synthetics (not geotechnical synthetics), geo-materials (not geotechnical materials), geo-technique (not geotechnical technique), geo-environmental (not geotechnical environmental), the list goes on. Associated with this question is the question: should we be the International Society for  Geo-Engineering (ISGE) rather than the International Society for Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering (ISSMGE)? I would like to hear your opinion on this matter.

Please do relay this message to all the members in your country.

Best wishes,
Jean-Louis BRIAUD
President of ISSMGE
